Companion app for iPhone

Don’t walk home alone after your next night out; join tens of thousands of others in using the free Companion app to have a friend or family member virtually accompany you on your journey and ensure you get home safely.

Developed by students at the University of Michigan, Companion lets iPhone users request virtual company on their journey home at night. Friends and family members are able to track their location using GPS and ensure that they make it home.

Users are able to send out requests to multiple friends and family members in case their first contact is unavailable, and those who are selected receive a text message that includes a URL to an online map that shows the Companion user’s location.

“If the user strays off their path, falls, is pushed, starts running or has their headphones yanked out of their phone, the app detects these changes in movements and asks the user if they’re OK,” reports International Business Times.

If the user is okay, they can tap a button onscreen within 15 seconds to confirm this. But if they don’t, Companion turns their iPhone or Android device into a “personal alarm system” that sounds loud noises to scare criminals or attackers. It also gives users the option to call the police.

Companion was designed with students in mind, so if the user calls the emergency services, the app will also inform their university campus’ safety department, too. It will also notify the contact who is accompanying the user home.

Companion was initially just for users in the U.S., but after receiving countless requests to support other countries, those with international numbers are now able to sign up.

“Both men and women from all demographics have emailed us saying they’d love to use the app, lots of parents want to use the app for their children, and some people want their elderly parents to use it too to make sure they don’t get lost,” said Lexie Ernst, co-founder of the app.

You can download the Companion app for iOS from the App Store now using the link below. An Android version is also available from Google Play.
