When you think of the ways in which your friends, family, coworkers and other people can electronically communicate with you, the usual likes of iMessage, Google Hangouts, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp might come up. Unless you’re Ethan, an iOS developer that created his own app — yes, named Ethan — for people to message him.
The premise of Ethan is incredibly simple: it is a messaging app for messaging Ethan. When he is not sleeping, Ethan has chats with strangers about topics ranging from personal advice to providing his opinion on what clothes look best on someone. Ethan will give his opinion on anything, but won’t do your work or fall in love with you.
Ethan earned the top place on Product Hunt yesterday, a website that curates some of the best new products released based on an upvoting system similar to Reddit. In exchange for being Ethan’s friend, all he asks is that you give him a five-star rating on the App Store.
Ethan explained the idea behind the app on Product Hunt:
“I wanted a fast way for my friends to message me–simply by opening the app–which is the only feature of the app,” wrote Ethan. “But then random people started downloading and I became sort of a virtual assistant at one point, finding music for romantic dinner or animes with dragons for them. Sometimes it’s hard because they keep asking me questions while i’m sleeping. That’s why I added the rules on the home page.”
The developer behind the surging app is named Ethan Gliechtenstein, and he has a form on his website where you can request a similar app be made for you. Simply enter your email address and provide a reason why you want your own version of Ethan, and just maybe we’ll start seeing Jonathan, Chris, Jacob and Matthew apps popping up.
The official description for Ethan from the App Store:
Ethan is an app that gives opinions. Want someone else’s opinion but don’t want to ask your friends? Want to ask someone before asking friends? Can’t make decisions? Ethan is there for you!
1. Can’t make a decision what to eat for dinner? Ask Ethan: “I can’t make up my mind whether to eat Chinese or Italian for dinner! What would you do?”
2. Need a tiebreaker? Ask Ethan: “I want to watch Fight Club, but my girlfriend wants to watch Mean Girls. What would you watch?”
3. Need second opinion on your wardrobe? Ask Ethan: “Does this necklace look better on me, or this one?”
Ethan is free on the App Store for iPhone.
